Glennford Dougan exhibit looks at role of Athens Countians in War Between the States
June 12, 2008
The Athens County Historical Society and Museum has opened a new exhibit at its satellite museum, the Athens County Military Museum. The new exhibit, “Heroes and Hell Raisers: Athens County and Ohio in the Civil War,” tells the story of Athens County during the Civil War and the role several Athens Countians played in the conflict, according to a press release.
Visitors can expect to see Civil War-era artifacts from ACHSM’s collection and replica loans. Local speakers will present various Civil War topics during Final Fridays on the Nelsonville Public Square from June to December, and re-enactors will display a Civil War encampment and present an artillery demonstrations at the opening June 7. The exhibit will also include a traveling component from the American Civil War Museum of Ohio, Inc. for a limited time. The exhibit closes Dec. 20.
Visitors can expect to see Civil War-era artifacts such as weapons, ammunition, an amputation kit, utensils, archival materials (such as letters and discharge papers), and a black Civil War era wedding dress, curator Joanne Prisley said in the news release.
“The dress was made to wear for several occasions — some that would call for celebrating and some for grieving,” she said.
The traveling exhibit component will be on display from June 20 through Aug. 30. This component gives visitors a general overview of Ohio in the Civil War.
“This exhibit marks the third year the Athens County Historical Society and Museum has used ACMM to explore the lives of Athens County veterans as they served in the U.S. military and what life was like for Athens County citizens during wartime,” Executive Director Kelee Riesbeck said in the release. “In 2006 we honored World War II veterans; in 2007, our Korea and Vietnam War veterans. Both of those exhibits included accounts from living veterans…”
Speaker presentations are scheduled for Final Fridays beginning at 7 p.m.
Topics such as Sherman’s March to the Sea and the life of Ohio University alum and Union Army Gen. Thomas Ewing will be presented.
ACMM is located at 145 W. Columbus St. in Nelsonville. For a listing of speakers and presentations and for more information, visit www.athenshistory.org or call 592-2280. The ACMM is open Fridays from 5-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 2-6 p.m.
