Hot Americana guitar picker set to play Fur Peace Saturday
May 1, 2008
One of the hottest Americana guitarists around is playing at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Station in Meigs County this Saturday.
Also an accomplished singer-songwriter and producer, Will Kimbrough will be playing with his trio. Opening is another great guitarist Pete Huttlinger (national finger-style guitar champion).
Kimbrough is perhaps best known as a “sideman to the stars,” adding his sizzling guitar to such pop and Americana luminaries as Jimmy Buffet, Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider, Kim Richey (former OU student!) and Josh Rouse.
However, he has some pretty impressive albums of his own, including 2006’s “Americanitis” (Daphne Records), which garnered the following praise from Don McLeese on Amazon: “The former frontman for Will and the Bushmen… guitarist Kimbrough here reinforces his reputation as a songwriter of great range and social conscience…”
More recently, Kimbrough issued a self-titled eight-song album last year on the Thirty Tigers label that some fans placed among the top 10 CDs of ’07.
The All Music Guide said the mainly acoustic CD had enough tunes “to whet the appetite of any curious listener and leave any serious fan salivating for more.
Though the term ‘Americana’ is the kiss of death for most artists these days… Kimbrough’s music comes right from the heart of traditional American song forms: Appalachian balladry, raw bluegrass, hillbilly blues…”
The show starts at 8 p.m. For ticket information, call 740-992-6228 or go to Blue Eagle Music or Haffa’s Records in Athens.

As a regular at "da Ranch", I have to say this was the best main act I have ever seen there (Sorry, Chris Smither).
A combination of well-written songs backed by great chops and incredible chord knowledge.
No wonder Kimbrough is the session player of choice on so many CDs.
One of the best all-round guitar players I have seen in the last 30 years, and well above the quality of the somewhat dated acts the ranch normally books.
