Event at OU to showcase hair and hairstyles from countries across the world
May 8, 2008
The Nigerian Community at Ohio University is collaborating with the Cares Network Initiative and other groups to organize the Hair Art Theater (HAT) this Sunday and a followup three-day training and consultation where women will be trained in hair braiding.
HAT is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. in Baker Center Ballroom (doors open at 6:30). Training workshops will be May 12-14, with the time and place to be announced.
The HAT idea was conceived by Omolola Anne Famuyiwa and developed by representatives of Cares Network Initiative (CNI) and Global Network for Community Development with support from faculties and staff of OU African Studies, Women Center, Interdisciplinary Arts and Multicultural Center.
HAT will begin with a hair show during which hairstyles from different regions – Africa, Asia, Western and Caribbean – and spanning from the 1960s to the present, will be modeled by women and men (and in videos). During the show, the resource person will meet prospective participants who will also have an opportunity to register. The event is focused on spouses of international students but will be open to spouses, students and the Athens community. Door prizes will be given for the most creative hairstyles at the event, and food will be served.
Those who attend will have an opportunity to sign up for learning the art of hair braiding (group or individual training). Tickets are available at the ISFS or at the door. Those who wish to model hairstyles from their countries or region, or from past eras should contact Famuyiwa at of126905@ohio.edu.
