Well, the sun shines bright in my Athens County home, wherever that may soon be. As one era comes to a close for me, another is most certainly opening up. Change is in the air as winter begins pressing toward this lovely fall. I feel that I am turning a brilliant color much like my perennial favorite, the maple.>>

To be a solid stone among the shifting sands. That is my goal. I suppose you could get biblical with that statement if you wanted. Jesus is the stone the builders rejected; then there were those fools who built their houses upon the sand, biblically speaking. So, am I saying I want to be my own personal Jesus? Or am I saying that I need to go and find the Man from Nazareth? I’ll leave that to the psychiatrists, or I’ll ask Jesus the next time we chat.>>

Distractions are the coolest thing ever — unless of course you are trying to get something done. Fortunately, I might be working on things with a mind toward completion, but I can rarely be said to be trying (except people’s nerves). As I labor onward toward being the King of Avoidance Techniques, I begin to revel and marvel at my ability to find distractions everywhere I go. I want to be clear, however; this is not related to the ADD-like inattention that is spreading like wildfire across our society. Mass media continue to clog the cognitive airwaves that infiltrate our brains and make things like concentration a ...make it ...hey look — a chicken!>>

Creativity can be such an elusive mistress; so can sleep. Tuesday night as I tried to sleep, the brain that would not work for me during waking hours composed, over the course of the whole night, a story of such subtlety and complexity I was continually amazed during my nightlong doze-and-wake cycles.>>

Well, I learned today that Mac computers, no matter how superior to PCs, are not impervious to failure, as I lost an almost complete article to my Mac’s foibles (although I must give kudos to Microsoft Word over the Mac Pages. I would have been saved by Microsoft, quite literally. Save and save often!). This is my first hate toward an otherwise delightful machine. Now I begin again with a heavy heart and tired fingers and an increased sense of stress related to deadline issues.>>

Greetings from the eastern edge of America, from one of my favorite island hideouts — me with the red beard taking after a former island favorite with a black one. I’ve just come from watching the massive waves that are being spawned by Hurricane Hanna, which is still far, far off of the coast of America at the time of the writing of this article. Hopefully, I will be back on my way northwest to you fine folks in Athens long before she decides to make landfall.>>

Letters trickle out like mindless words into a random dot. They, fickle, while away my time amongst my puny verse. Words are blowing out of my mind like dripless faucets chasing rhymes, digressing and insulting me. To whit, for what do I play with this horrid contamination of our psyche? To give Tippy something to be glib about? I seriously doubt it.>>

I’ve been having all of these conflicting things going through my mind lately. As great as life is here in Athens, I can’t help but think that so many of my friends and I are doing a “grin and bear it” dance. I think it’s crap. Somehow over the last number of years, we have been beaten down and brainwashed, screwed and totally taken advantage of. Bill Clinton sold us out with NAFTA (it’s always been my contention that manufacturing, or the ability to manufacture, is the bedrock of a solid economy or society), and the middle class has been slowly eroding ever since.>>

It was a cranky day at the office. The talk around the beer cooler was filled with expletives fully armed and as barbed as a prison fence. Perhaps spirited would be a better word. It was refreshing to my ears to hear people be passionate about a variety of topics, none of which included sports — that was being taken care of, albeit silently, by the talking heads on the TV.>>

I’ve been living in this town for 16 years. The summers used to be much like Ohio University’s winter breaks, with just us ghost-townies and the occasional Appalachian tumbleweed floating down the street and getting caught in a tree. Since those days of yore, OU has been upping its summer enrollment programs, which has led to a much more robust summer quarter.>>

It was nice to see the sun today before I started writing this article in the sub-basement of a fine establishment. All this rain has made me soggy. I can deal with it as long as the music stays as awesome as it has been since the tourists left.>>

Just when I thought things were crazy, they are getting even crazier. It’s certainly not the heat, as that has been reasonable lately by Athens’ standards, but man alive, things keep getting thicker – and not even localized to Athens! The stars must be in some weird alignment, or maybe I’m just off my meds – wait, I was never on any; I am a self-medicated man (maybe I should double-check that!).>>

OK, folks, it’s just us… for this week anyway. Welcome to summer – Athens style. The best part about it is there seems to be no ebb to the music. That means all you folks who hide out in the hills are due to make your occasional appearances.>>

Place is meaningful. Given their age, most of the denizens of this town are accustomed to moving every nine months or so — or at least moving home for the summer.>>

Remember what I said last week about the weirdness being at bay? Well, not anymore. It’s full on and I feel more comfortable now that it is upon us. To wit: I’m never hanging a flier again in this town. I have been here a long time, and I know the rules of posting fliers. For those of you who don’t know the rules, they are fairly simple: If there is a bulletin board, or an approved window space, you are fine; just don’t put them on the poles or on the outside of buildings or you risk getting fined.>>

The time of Gemini is upon us, yet the weirdness is at bay. Maybe I am so inundated with weird and randomness that I am finally at home in the chaos that most certainly surrounds us. We’ll see, I suppose.>>
