Athens Music Scene

Whacko Alert: I spent Sunday honoring many of the tragedies that have occurred in the past number of years (Waco, Oklahoma bombing, Hitler’s birth, etc.) by watching a disc of movies about the events of 9/11.

I’ve had this for a while and had been putting it off for a day when I needed something to make life more scary and depressing than I was currently experiencing it. To say that it worked would be an understatement.

I’m not about to launch into a lengthy diatribe about the who or how or what of it (unless you meet me on the street) but I will say one thing: I, along with otherwise thoughtful individuals, have been buying into the line of crap that we have been fed on this particular topic. I was lulled to sleep by the endless parade and charade. It was too much to fathom, to big to be real. I no longer believe that.

I may not believe everything on the discs but brothers and sisters, they raised some extremely interesting points. I’ll just repeat what the more coherent theorists continue to say: Look at the evidence. It is mind-boggling.

The following day I did some research to answer questions that needed further exploration. There is a wealth of information out there, some of it whacko, but much of it consistent. Particularly interesting are the Web sites for Scholars for 9/11 Truth & Justice and Pilots for 9/11 Truth.

One thing that I believe to be true: Those buildings didn’t come down because of fire, or even because planes hit them (no planes hit WTC7, and they were designed to withstand such an incident). Rather, they were blown up in what is called a Controlled Demolition. Watch the movies. Watch the buildings fall at near free-fall speed, and ask yourself why, for the first time in recorded history, three steel frame buildings fell as a result of fire.

I’m not trying to convert anyone to anything, as I have no particular belief myself; I just encourage you to check this stuff out. It’s horrifyingly fascinating. If someone has a DVD burner, let’s get together and make some copies of this stuff.

Casa Cantina

Tonight Casa has an InterAct benefit featuring Kaslo, Gypsy Cab, The Balloon People, and the band that’s blowing everyone away, October Fist.

An International Dance Night with DJ Self-Help is on tap for Friday night.

Saturday night’s show is a doozy. Hue Blanc’s Joyless Ones come down from Wisconsin to let fire a hot whip of rock and roll. Remember The Tears? These are some of the same folks. Pink Reason is a good reason to make sure you’re there; more serious rock action. The Never Evers are our own homegrown rock crew, heavy on mood. Michael Zinc’s Nugget Fancy brings his psychedelic experimentation to bear on your brains as though you were in Green Bay with him.

Sunday night, in an attempt to raise awareness about Sexual Assault, a benefit is scheduled for Tri-County’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program. Featured groups will be The Bob Stewart Band, Big Kiff and Broken Ring, featuring the lovely vocals of Colleen Girton.

Jackie O’s

Tonight, the musical mastery of Zach Deputy returns to Jackie O’s. This man once turned a cold and lonely Sunday night into one warm, hopping tropical event. He utilizes looping techniques that allow him to build a song right before your eyes. I have never before seen a crowd take to anyone like they did him. It was crazy. He and his hand-drumming sidekick drive all over in their big RV and have more gear than Skynard. You can even take home a copy of the show with you; they record it and burn discs right on the spot.

Jackie O’s has a KAIROS benefit on Friday night with some sort of fun for everyone.

Memphis (the band) makes it back to Athens Saturday night after a long absence from the scene. Hailing from Chapel Hill, N.C., and hauling a B3 w/ Leslie, these folks lay down some serious boogie-woogie rock and roll destined to get your butts-a-shakin’. The Paranormals prepare their usual schmaltz to open the night.

The Union

Dance or Die returns to the Union tonight to funkify your souls and to get your soles movin’ and groovin’.

Last weekend was Blackout Fest; this weekend it’s For Real Fest. Where last week was more underground rock, this is more DIY (Do It Yourself) punk. This fest has been going on for a few years at least and is a good time for sure. Friday’s music begins at 7 p.m. and features bands from across the U.S. Triceratops headlines the bill and the following folks will rock you until then: Weed Steeler, Unrestrained, Juice Tyme, Giant, Khann, Right Idea.

Saturday’s show begins at 2 p.m. and features the mighty Insurrect as the headliner. The other acts include Cheap Tragedies, Delay, Black Dove, Raw Sewage, We March, Coke Bust, Kingdom, Harm’s Way, In Defence, Black Market Fetus, Endless Mike and the Beagle Club, Lemuria, Wartorn, Dead Radical, I Hate This, Appalachian Terror Unit and Sick Fix. A Vegan Potluck will be held before the show.

The Union is now hosting the Hip Hop Shop on Monday nights and an Open Stage on Tuesdays.

Blue Gator

Tonight Alex Vaughn & the Big Idea will let loose with their Dave Matthews/Jack Johnson-style beach rock. The Barefooted Bootleggers open the night.

Friday evening at 5, the Gathering Place will hold its second annual Gala Event upstairs at the Blue Gator. They’ll have food and music, featuring the talents of Laura Nadeau, Tony Adami, Megan Cameron and The Jazz Cream Assassins. The event includes a Silent Auction and Art Expo among other fun things.

Saturday night the Gator offers a benefit for the Organ Donor Association called Miracle of Life. Infinity Ball is coming in from Cincy to play their “infectious groove-based rock,” replete with lots of dry humor. They intend to “eff the ineffable.”

Baker Center

Broken Ring will perform at Baker Center on the second floor for the Acoustic Café from 12-1 Wednesday afternoon. This band features Nik Gruber on guitar, Tom Daniels on bass. Singer Colleen Girton sings like a bird and strums a guitar.

Donkey Coffee

Friday: I first read about The Black Swans in Mojo, the pre-eminent British music magazine. I was surprised to find out they were from Columbus, until I figured out who’s in the band. Two ex-Athenians, Noel Sayre (Pretty Mighty Mighty) and Canaan Faulkner (the Randys) are top-notch musicians. With Jerry DeCicca, they create a beguiling blend of quirky folk-rock that’s a delight to listen to. Russenorsk adds their indie-folk-rock to the blend for a nice evening of tunes.

The Jarts are excited to announce the release of their debut CD, “Circadian Clocks,” and they’re having a party on Saturday night. I’ve heard the album is “a dreamy, lush, folk-rock work of wonder.” Come and hear for yourself, and then buy a copy! (The NEWS previews the show/CD in today’s issue.)

Court Street Grill - Pomeroy

The Bill Noonan Band comes to ROCK the Grill on Saturday night. David Childers has been writing songs and recording with him for years. Dave says he’s “a Hellcat.” That’s high praise from one who knows (as he is one himself). If any of you remember the Rank Outsiders out of N.C. a bunch of years ago, well, Bill had a hand in that too.

Rhapsody - Nelsonville

Steve Zarate is back waxing peppers at the Rhapsody Friday night, picking and harmonicacizing his way through your culinary delights.

I betcha there’s about a million things going on this weekend beyond what I have been able to discover, so keep your ears open for the sweet strains of music, and I will meet you there.

You drank the elixir. How about reading real evidence and not liberal conspiracy crap.

The reason that the twin towers collapsed was:
1) The jets first knocked out numerous supports when they flew into the towers.
2) This meant that the remaining supports were almost at their load-limit (they were supporting 200,000 tons)
3) The fires then caused the supports to weaken & bend
(Steel loses 90%, yes 90%, of its strength at 1100 deg C, which is the temp of an ordinary building fire.)
4) Photographs clearly showed the steel supports bending:
There was “inward bowing of the exterior columns, reaching an observable maximum of about 55 in. near column 316 on the 96th floor. The inward deflection appeared to extend over the entire south face of the building at this time, and was visible between the 94th and 100th floors.”
