It’s certainly not the heat, as that has been reasonable lately by Athens’ standards, but man alive, things keep getting thicker – and not even localized to Athens! The stars must be in some weird alignment, or maybe I’m just off my meds – wait, I was never on any; I am a self-medicated man (maybe I should double-check that!).>>

Southern women take control in OVST’s first play of summer

With all the big hair and Southern drawl a Louisiana beauty parlor can bring, Ohio Valley Summer Theater’s production of “Steel Magnolias” premiers tonight at ARTS/West in Athens. OVST opens its summer play season with this classic play written by Robert Harling that follows the laughable and sometimes tearful lives of six women who seem to share a common affinity for gossip and hair.>>

The Athens County Historical Society and Museum has opened a new exhibit at its satellite museum, the Athens County Military Museum. The new exhibit, “Heroes and Hell Raisers: Athens County and Ohio in the Civil War,” tells the story of Athens County during the Civil War and the role several Athens Countians played in the conflict, according to a press release.>>

To wit: I’m never hanging a flier again in this town. I have been here a long time, and I know the rules of posting fliers. For those of you who don’t know the rules, they are fairly simple: If there is a bulletin board, or an approved window space, you are fine; just don’t put them on the poles or on the outside of buildings or you risk getting fined.>>
