Thursday

MUSIC:

• In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the landmark Turbonegro album, “Apocalypse Dudes,” The Union will play the album in its entirety.

ART:

• Art of the Zuni. Kennedy Museum of Art, Lin Hall, OU. Through Nov. 20.

• Bead International and Beyond Basketry. An exhibition of pierced objects and woven vessels that features trends in the media of beads and basketry. Dairy Barn Arts Center. Through Sept. 1.

• The Athens County Historical Society and Museum is holding a Civil War exhibit called “Heroes and Hell Raisers: Athens County and Ohio during in the Civil War” at the Athens County Military Museum in Nelsonville. • “Politics and Portraits: The Art of Murray P. Stern.” Through Sept. 28 at the Kennedy Museum of Art, The Ridges, OU, Athens.

• Art opening at Casa Nueva, featuring work by Jackie Rovner and Jade Downer. 10 p.m.

• Art show opening of paintings of musicians on vinyl on canvas. 6-8 p.m. at Donkey Coffee. The “Vinyl Café” exhibit runs through Sept. 20.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Supper: Weekly free supper sponsored by UCM: Center for Spiritual Growth and Social Justice. 5:30 p.m. at UCM, 18 N. College St. Open to everyone, no questions asked. 593-7301.

Free Community Meals: Are being provided this summer, Mondays through Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Aug. 8, at The Plains United Methodist Church. The food is provided by the staff and volunteers of Good Works Inc. and the church. No eligibility requirements. Volunteers interested in assisting with food preparation can contact Good Works at 594-3339.

Childhood Immunizations: Every Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the ground floor of Parks Hall, OU. OU-COM Community Service Programs’ Childhood Immunization Program. Free to all area children from birth through 18. Bring your child’s previous shot records.

Free Clinic: The Ohio University College of Medicine Community Health Program provides a free clinic every week for those 19-64. Please call 740-593-9364 or 1-800-844-2654 for more information.

Produce Donations: Community Food Initiatives wants your help in feeding the hungry in our community. Bring any extra produce from your gardens to the CFI Donation Station at the Athens Farmers Market or drop it off at 143 Morris Ave., Athens. All donations will be given to local agencies that support the abused, homeless and hungry. For more information, call 593-5971.

MUSIC:

• OU alum Erin Wiles returns to Athens for two spoken-word performances. One at 9 p.m. Friday at Donkey Coffee and the other during the Word Arts Foundation’s reading at Ash Cave in the Hocking Hills Saturday at 4 p.m.

• Mr. Brown and Dub Kids. Jackie O’s.

• Jack Oblivian with the Apostle TK. (Jack played in the legendary Memphis band The Oblivians, as well as the Compulsive Gamblers (both with Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright). Apostle TK is Tyler Keith’s new band, and will back up Jack and play their own set. Wheels on Fire will open. The Union.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Friday Night Supper for the Hungry: A sit-down nutritional meal for the hungry and homeless is provided by community organizations and churches who volunteer. 5:30 p.m. every Friday. For info call Good Works at 594-3339.

Learning Experience: A two-day learning experience titled “Agents of Change: The Nationally Significant Roles of the Miners of the Little Cities in the Nation’s Early Labor Movement.” Takes place at various locations in Perry, Athens and Hocking counties on Aug. 8 and 9. Guided tours, presentations, theatrical readings and a video documentary. Pre-registration required. Bloodmobile: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hocking Valley Bank, Stimson Avenue, Athens.

Readings: The Word Arts Foundation of Athens is presenting a free reading at 4 p.m. at Ash Cave in the Hocking Hills State Park. WAF will present this year’s winner of the Spirit of Southeast Ohio poetry contest. In addition, writers from Athens, Logan and St. Louis will perform. Free. Take Ohio Rt. 56 about 25 miles west from Athens to get to Ash Cave.

Saturday

MUSIC:

• Kent Lankas plays the piano every Saturday night from  6-8 at Cutler’s Restaurant in the Ohio University Inn.

Living History: Frank Bullock will embody William Tecumseh Sherman from 2-4 p.m. He will begin his presentation at 2 p.m. on the Athens County Courthouse steps, then will proceed down the street to the Athens County Historical Society & Museum, 65 N. Court St., Athens, where he will continue his presentation. 592-2280.

Cooking Contest: The Friends of the Athens Farmers Market are holding a cooking contest, aka “Squash It!”, at the Farmers Market. Judging starts at 10 a.m. Registration deadline was Aug. 6. Call 593-6213 for more info.

Poker Run: Benefit for David Jones and family for kidney transplant. Lakeview Tavern. Last bike out at noon, back in by 5 p.m., when a hog roast will start. Food Summit: All-day gathering to connect community members and local food movement leaders. 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at ARTS/West in Athens. The gathering is intended to learn, celebrate, share and plan the many initiatives and activities in the growing movement for healthy, fair, green and affordable food. This is free with a flexible agenda. Come for part or all of the day.
