Cab company confident it will get its license back

May 12, 2008

An Athens taxi service will attempt to get its license back in a hearing today over what the owner says was just a misunderstanding.

On May 6, Gary Kerber, owner of the Go To Cab Company, had his  license suspended by the city due to a question over whether the company had the necessary insurance.

A May 6 letter from Paula Horan-Mosely, service-safety director and chair of the Athens Taxi Board, states that the city received notification from the company’s previous insurance carrier that the insurance policy had been cancelled. Because of that notification, the city had to suspend the license and order a hearing, set for today at 3 p.m. in the mayor’s conference room in the city building.

The Taxi Board is made up of Horan-Mosely, Police Chief Richard Mayer and Code Director Steve Pierson.

“If the board agrees, the chair of the Taxi Board can suspend a license pending a hearing,” Pierson explained.

Pierson added that Kerber came into his office after he received the letter and told him that the cab company was never without insurance coverage because a policy with another company started as soon as the policy with the first company ended.

“It appears to be continuous coverage,” Pierson said. The city, though, had no way of knowing that the cap company had coverage with another company, he added.

Horan-Mosely agreed that it looks like the company was never without coverage, and said the issue will be settled during today’s hearing.

Kerber said Saturday that he had insurance the whole time and that it was frustrating not being able to operate his business for three days last week.

“I missed a great number of calls,” Kerber said. He said the suspension was due to an “unfortunate error of omission” and he expects to have his business running again on Monday. His is the newest cab company in Athens, and Kerber said he’s expanding his hours so he is open Tuesday through Saturday 24 hours a day, and that he will have some special summer rates.
