City Police report wave of thefts from unlocked homes in town

May 15, 2008

During the past several months, the Athens City Police have been receiving numerous reports of unlocked residences being entered during the early morning hours, and on several occasions, during the late morning hours.

During these reported entries, lap-top computers, cameras, iPods, video games and other electronics have been stolen, according to police.

On several occasions, according to a police news release, the residents and/or visitors of the homes have confronted the individuals who are responsible for these burglaries.

While the majority of these burglaries have taken place in the Ohio University student residential areas, some have occurred in other locations in Athens.

In the release, the Athens City Police asked anyone who may have purchased items similar to those listed above from any individuals or who may have information regarding the burglaries, to contact Lt. John Withers or Investigators Gary Braglin or Rick Olexa at (740) 592-3315 or (740) 592-3313.

Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous may also be contacted, and rewards are available for this information as these burglaries have been listed as crimes of the month. Crime Solvers Anonymous can be called at (740) 594-3331.
