Swine flu is the least of my worries this winter. I’m more afraid that I am going to come down with a huge case of “Hype” in the next couple of weeks.
This disease controls the brains and the hearts of die-hard sports fans into believing that their favorite teams have a legitimate shot at a title… their pre-season. Hype makes people hallucinate. Hype leads to disappointment and death of the spirit.
The mid-season letdown has caught up to the Ohio football team. Making it through the league schedule unblemished seemed unlikely, but the Kent State loss Saturday at home came at a surprising time for the Bobcats.
Before Saturday’s 20-11 defeat to Kent, Ohio’s season had followed the script, and the Bobcats were ready to become bowl eligible and maintain their post atop the Mid-American Conference.

The Ohio University football team could not be in a much better spot. Ohio (5-2, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) is off to its best start since 1997, and is currently tied for first place in the MAC East.
Add in a three-game winning streak and a convincing 28-7 win last week over rival Miami, and the Bobcats have some confidence right now.
Dear Candace and McKenzie, don’t go to Miami! I know that this is junior year in high school, and any campus 150 miles away from mom and dad looks appealing, but I just can’t let my little sisters become RedHawks without knowing the facts.
This seems like a sign of betrayal. I chose Ohio University because of its beautiful campus, great journalism program and its reputation for hosting the best parties in the state. Miami? They have bell towers if that does it for you.
The Ohio football team improved to a perfect 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference with a 28-7 victory over rival Miami in front of a Homecoming crowd of more than 20,000 Saturday afternoon in Peden Stadium.
The win improved Ohio to 5-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in the MAC, the Bobcats’ best start in better than a decade. Miami dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the league, suffering its fourth-straight loss to Ohio, the longest such streak since 1960-64 (five straight).

The last four years the Ohio football team has seen just about everything. The current seniors have gone through some of the program’s highs and lows — including a bowl berth in 2006 and a four-win season last year — and now the Bobcats have the chance to do something special this weekend against Miami of Ohio.
Ohio has won three straight against the RedHawks, and the Bobcat seniors can become the first class since 1964 to never lose to Miami.
For a change, Athens-Nelsonville game has a lot on the line

The Athens and Nelsonville-York football teams have played each other for the Doc Kroner Trophy for the last 25 years. The trophy, named for longtime Athens trainer Dr. John Kroner, has recently made a semi-permanent residence in Nelsonville.
The Buckeyes have dominated the series since 2003, leaving some players on Athens’ roster wondering what the trophy even looks like.
Classes are really getting to me this quarter. I leave exhausted, out of breath and soaked. My professor even told me that this was a class where I could “just tread water and pass.”
Literally!
I scheduled an introductory swim class (PESS 103) last spring as a way to balance out my schedule of three English classes and to hopefully earn an easy A in the process. And now, after our mid-term evaluations, if I get anything but an A my dad is going to kill me. This could be a worse idea than forbidding the Spears sisters birth control.
Opportunistic defense powers Ohio to victory at Akron

Editor’s note: This is the article that Ohio University Sports Media Relations (www.ohiobobcats.com) put together after Saturday night’s Ohio-Akron game.
AKRON, Ohio — The Ohio University defense forced five turnovers Saturday evening to power the Bobcats past the Akron Zips 19-7 at InfoCision Stadium in Akron. The Bobcats improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while Akron dropped to 1-4 and 0-2 in the league.
The win, which snapped the program’s five-game losing streak at Akron, gave Ohio its best record through six games since starting 5-1 in 1997 and its first 2-0 MAC start since 1999.
Chris Garrett took the handoff and could see the hole in Bowling Green’s secondary. Once he broke through the line, he knew he had nobody stopping his path to the end zone, and Ohio’s senior running back scurried for a 37-yard touchdown for the Bobcats first rushing score of the season.
It’s October! This means Halloween costumes that resemble a scene from “Coyote Ugly” and Sam Adams Octoberfest beer. But to the foam-finger-waving, double-play loving, Barry Bonds-hating fans of Major league Baseball this season is our Christmas, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving and surprise birthday party all in one.
Bring me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks because I’m not leaving my couch.
