Ohio University is close to reaching a three-year contract extension with head football coach Frank Solich, departing Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt confirmed over the weekend.
Solich will enter his fourth season at the helm of the program this fall. His current contract pays him $257,162 annually and expires Dec. 31, 2009. Financial terms of a possible extension were not disclosed.
“We’re very close,” said Hocutt. “I think we are 99 percent of the way there. It could come to conclusion on Monday or Tuesday, but if not, I would say in the near future.”
The extension would be for three years through the end of 2012, ensuring Solich, 63, five more seasons as head coach.
“I had a chance to sit down and present an extension proposal to Frank a few days ago, and I believe that it was received very well. It’s something that Frank was going to go back and give some thought to,” Hocutt said.
Hocutt’s last day of work is Tuesday, and he could not say for certain whether the agreement would be finalized by then. However, Hocutt said he has spoken with OU President Roderick McDavis and new Director of Athletics Jim Schaus about the possible new deal.
“It is a situation that I’ve spoken to Jim about, and I’ve shared with him what I presented to Frank, and he was in support of it,” Hocutt said. “If we don’t sign a letter of understanding by the end of the day Tuesday, I’m confident that it will be a priority for the Schaus era once it begins.”
