Mary Cowan Doxsee died early Sunday morning, May 11, 2008 at the Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. She was born in New York City on September 22, 1919, the daughter of late David William Cowan and Harriet Sanford Cowan.
Mary taught textiles in the Ohio University School of Home Economics from 1953 until her final retirement in 1989. She graduated from Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, in 1943, did graduate study at Teacher’s College Columbia University as well as Leeds University in England.
Before joining the Ohio University faculty, Mary had taught Navajo youngsters Home Economics at the Presbyterian Mission High School in Ganado, Arizona. She had also taught at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee, and had worked in research for Sears, Roebuck and Company in New York City.
Mary was an active parishioner for many years at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Athens. She was a founding member of the Athens County Historical Society and Museum where she served as a volunteer helping with acquisitions for a decade after retiring. Other activities and memberships included The Athens Reading Club, Downtown Kiwanis, the Pallas Club, and professional organizations such as the International Wool Secretariat.
She is survived by her husband, Gifford B. Doxsee; her niece, Pamela Wahl; two nephews, Colin and David Frost; and her special friend, Julia Nehls.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her only sister, Ruth Cowan Frost.
A memorial service will be held June 18th, Wednesday, at 4:00PM in the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Athens with Rev. William Carroll officiating. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home.
