Endorsement: Bring balance: Elect Sikora and Russo to Ohio Supreme Court
October 9, 2008
We recommend the election of Peter Sikora and Joseph Russo to the Ohio Supreme Court in November. Both are qualified Democrats who would bring desperately needed balance to this conservative court.>>

Endorsement: Vote for Richard Cordray to serve the final two years of Dann’s term
October 9, 2008
We support Richard Cordray to take over the last two years of disgraced former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann’s term. Cordray, currently the state treasurer, has an impressive resume of public service, as well as good ideas for how to improve AG operations.>>

Editor’s Notes: Four shortwinded editorials for the price of one windbag
October 9, 2008
Today, Editor’s Notes is back with an economic consolation prize, some commentary on the dumped Stimson Avenue retirement center, the worst campaign mailer ever, and Sarah Palin, the liberal. (I’m also implementing a new format for this column, after some OU student’s blog recently accused me of being longwinded. I’ll place small headers on each item, to emphasize the fact that instead of being one very long column, this is actually a series of small editorials. In effect, I’m being shortwinded four times.)>>

Commentary: The second time as farce
October 9, 2008
This is not the Crash of 1929 revisited, and we are not heading into a second Great Depression. No developed country this time round is going to face the 25 percent unemployment rate that the United States experienced in the 1930s.>>

Letter: Congress worries about Wall St. but not starving U.S. children
October 9, 2008
There are 3 million children in America, including 130,000 in Ohio, who depend on the reformed welfare system to meet their basic needs. The families of these children comply with all of the time limits, work requirements, extensive verifications and numerous rules of the Temorary Assistance for Needy Families block grant. An average family of two on TANF in Ohio receives $336 a month in cash assistance and would also be eligible for a maximum of $298 a month in food stamps. When combined, this only provides an income of roughly half of the federal poverty level. Ohio’s benefit amount is close to the national average.>>

Letter: Candidates keep talking about ‘clean coal’ that doesn’t exist
October 9, 2008
As the woman who asked Sen. Biden the controversy-causing question about “clean coal” at a rope line in Maumee, Ohio, I continue to be concerned over how little politicians and the media have thought through the consequences of a coal future.>>

Letter: Right environmental presidential candidate not the one you think
October 9, 2008
Not long ago, Sen. Barack Hussein Obama of Illinois released a small blueprint, in comparison to his other plans, for specific ideas regarding improved relations with the environment. What his plan includes is multiple ways of expanding the creation of energy in America, whether wind, solar, biodiesel, or, yes, drilling for oil — just not in Alaska’s ANWR reserve.>>

Letter: Palin’s own words confirms her lack of intellectual heft, scientific chops
October 9, 2008
A recent letter writer (Carol Costanzo) protested my allegations that Sarah Palin was of “limited intellect” and has a “contempt for science.”>>

Letter: OU should consider quality Indian firm for information system contract
October 9, 2008
Some years back, I had children who swam. As a result, I got involved in fund-raising for the aquatic center when it came to the acquisition of 10 stainless-steel starting platforms. As you see, the state had purchased 10 platforms for the center already but an additional 10 where required to accommodate the needs of age-group swimming, which includes 50-, 100- and 200-meter events.>>

Letter: The major parties really goofed in missing an ideal VP candidate
October 9, 2008
I believe that both political parties have passed up a golden opportunity to pick an ideal vice-presidential running mate. Namely, me. Here are the reasons:>>

Letter: Justice seldom is equal at the Athens County Courthouse
October 9, 2008
You know the legal system is quite confusing, but it really shouldn’t be. If two people commit the same crime, they should get the same time, regardless of how much money one has. I have sat through a lot of hearings at the Athens County Courthouse over the last few years, and if you ever wonder why you live in one of the poorest counties in the state, well, take a trip to the courthouse, and sit and watch your tax dollars at work. The prosecutor’s office is an embarrassment to the community. They don’t investigate their cases properly; they waste money – taking cases to court that if investigated they could have won.>>

Letter: Beware an ‘October surprise’ with Israel bombing Iraq
October 9, 2008
Back when I played on the 1962 Ohio State High School Football championship team that finished second in the nation, we loved our football moms, but to think of any one of them competing on the field with high-school football players would be absurd. Absurdity takes on new meaning when an aging coach of a professional team appoints as his successor an incapable person with no chance in the world to lead on the field of battle in any other way than as a cheerleader. Beauty Queen answers to questions that divert substance with a smile and wink may be an adorable way to win a beauty contest but what does that say for the old warrior coach who chose a cheerleader to replace him?>>

Letter: Palin’s ‘zoning-gate’ nothing compared to Obama’s record
October 9, 2008
With intrepid investigative reporters like the AP’s Brett Blackledge and fearless editorialists like Terry Smith (The NEWS, Oct. 2), we may yet be able to stop the Republican juggernaut from putting Sarah Palin on Air Force Two. “Zoning-gate!” Shocking. No wonder her approval in Alaska has reportedly “plummeted” from 86 to 68 percent (at a time when Congress polls roughly 6 to 8 percent.)>>

Letter: Casino ‘industry’ touted in Issue 6 will hurt Ohio and its people

I want to raise the alarm about the Wilmington casino proposed by State Issue 6. The Ohio people and the Ohio economy would not benefit from casinos.>>

Letter: Kudos to deputy who runs Internet predator program
October 9, 2008
I read the article in your paper last week about Deputy Sherrie Norman and the Internet program. I had to write you a letter and voice my opinion. I think, after reading that article, that you have found your number-one woman for the Women in Athens issue this coming Monday! I can’t wait to see that special issue every year, to see what the women in Athens are involved in.>>

Letter: The more people who participate in democracy, the better we’ll be
October 9, 2008
Fellow Athenians: Give yourselves a pat on the back! Everywhere I go these days — along Court Street, from the bike trail, at the Farmers Market, on campus — I see evidence of you participating in the democratic process. Both sides marching in parades, registering voters, plunking down yard signs, writing letters, and knocking on doors. It’s a beautiful thing to watch and be a part of and surely a good sign about the health of our nation.>>

From the Publisher: A call to arms: You can fight senior retirement housing and bash OU, too
October 6, 2008
Publisher’s note: This column was originally published June 2, 2005. On Friday, National Church Residences of Columbus announced that they are scrapping plans for a retirement center on Ohio University land off of Stimson Avenue. (See article on page 15 in this issue.) I thought this would be a good time to re-run my 2005 column, which fairly accurately predicted what would happen.>>
