Reader’s Forum: Mission Accomplished: George W. Bush presidency a success
May 12, 2008
It seems that everybody these days is picking on President* Bush just because his approval rating is circling the drain. Way to kick a guy when he’s down, America! Stop misunderestimating our 43rd president* – he’s doing a heck of a job. You just have to consider the known unknowns of what he and his administration have “mission accomplished.” Bush’s logic is not hard to follow, if you are of the same mind; but most Americans just don’t have the intellect to see the brilliance of Bush’s legacy.>>

Letter: Plunkett cartoon captured the hypocrisy of WOUB officials
May 12, 2008
Kudos to Sandy Plunkett for a terrific political cartoon in the May 1 Athens NEWS distilling the hypocrisy of WOUB’s refusal to carry “Democracy Now” while OU shamelessly gushes over Fox News President Roger Ailes’ gift of media equipment to his alma mater.>>

Letter: Local committee springs up to advocate for undocumented workers
May 12, 2008
The members of the local Immigrant Rights Committee would like to invite the community to an upcoming film screening focusing on immigrant issues. The film “Dying to Live” will be screened this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Ohio University’s Alden Library 319 (Friends of the Libraries Room). According to the film’s Web site, “’Dying to Live’ is a profound look at the human face of the immigrant. It explores who these people are, why they leave their homes and what they face in their journey. Drawing on the insights of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographers, theologians, church and congressional leaders, activists, musicians and the immigrants themselves, this film exposes the places of conflict, pain and hope along the U.S.-Mexico border. It is a reflection of the human struggle for a more dignified life and the search to find God in the midst of that struggle.” We hope to create awareness of the serious concerns facing immigrants not only across the nation but within our very own community. Education is key to build understanding.>>

Letter: Thanks to all who helped draw attention to the uninsured in our area
May 12, 2008
As the southeast Ohio grassroots coordinator for Ohio Consumers for Healthcare Coverage (OCHC), I would like to take a moment to thank several people for their support during Cover the Uninsured Week. I would like to thank the Athens County Commissioners for taking the time during their busy meeting to proclaim April 27-May 3 Cover the Uninsured Week in Athens County. In so doing they recognized that there are indeed 8,900 uninsured adults and 800 uninsured children living right here in Athens County.>>

Dispatches from the Ivory Trailer: Imagine the possibility of a complaint-free world? No thanks
May 8, 2008
Have you heard about the Complaint Free World movement? It apparently started in a Unity church in Missouri a little over a year ago when the pastor challenged the congregation to quit their belly-achin’ for a while. The nature of the challenge? To go 21 days without griping, moaning, complaining, or generally being grumpy.>>

May 8, 2008
While I respect the opinions of people who are opposed to allowing concealed-carry weapons (CCW) on campus, I would prefer they use logic and reason to back up their statements rather then misleading statistics and assumptions, as John Calhoun did in his May 5 letter.>>

Letter: Article about Holocaust event had some misinterpretations
May 8, 2008
I would like to clear up some misquotes in the article about my Holocaust presentation (The NEWS, May 5). Attached is the lecture that I presented on Thursday evening. As I am sure you will see from my words, the purpose of this lecture was to remind others of the importance of remembrance to “prevent one’s past from becoming another’s future.” The purpose was not to speak against the way that I was raised, and I would like to iterate the fact that my mother and I have a very healthy and loving relationship. I never said anything about not having a proper, loving relationship with my mother. She is just as much a part of this journey of “forgiveness, hope, love and remembrance” as I am.>>
