Letter: UCM also offers free weekly suppers, and soon, Sat. lunches
July 17, 2008
To the Editor:
For those of you who have been reading the reports of the food-pantry crisis in our region and want to get involved, Thursday Supper offers you an opportunity to directly serve our community. Started at UCM to fill the need for another weekly free-meal program, Thursday Supper celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and serves an average of 40 community members every week.
Thursday Supper is served every week in the lower level of UCM, 18 N. College Street, at 5:30 p.m. and is open to everyone. You may volunteer as an individual or sign up with friends, family members, faith group, class project, etc. for one date or more between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (call for available dates). We also gratefully accept gift cards to local grocery stores, cash and food donations (call ahead if bringing food so we can store it properly).
We are grateful to the following for making Thursday Supper happen over the summer months, when our OU student volunteer population drops: Aupala Huq, Essam Mikhail, Christ the King, the Chuch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Plains, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, Civitan, and many more dedicated community members and organizations! We also thank the local growers of the Athens Farmers Market for their weekly donations of fresh produce.
To get involved, please call 593-7301 or e-mail ucmcf@frognet.net.
UCM is happy to report that our second weekly free meal program, Saturday Lunch, will return on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. As of now, Saturday Lunch operates only when Ohio University is in session fall, winter and spring quarters.
