Local nonprofit health-care agency wins statewide honor

June 2, 2008

The Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO) has announced that Havar Inc. is the most recent Ohio nonprofit, and the first from southeast Ohio, to achieve “Standards for Excellence,” according to a press release. Havar Inc. was recognized at the third annual Ohio Nonprofit Excellence Award luncheon attended by more than 250 nonprofit executives, leaders and legislators at the Ohio Statehouse.

Havar Inc. was formed in 1976. It has started programs for Ohioans with disabilities such as home ownership by individuals with disabilities, services aimed at children and adults with autism and the Building Bridges Adult Centers. Havar Inc. will join more than 25 nonprofits in Ohio that have already achieved the “Standards” certification.

“It takes great dedication to undergo the certification process,” said Jennifer Williams, OANO’s executive director, in a press release. “We are proud to give the honor to Havar Inc. Their work shows the commitment they have to those who benefit from their programs, their contributors and to the public.”

The “Standards” program was created in 1995 with grants from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Shortly after the formation of the trial program in Maryland, Ohio was selected to participate.
