Spectacular Kids of Athens County: Sarah Whitmore, 11

By Danaline McPhail Bryant

August 7, 2008

Sarah Whitmore is a salesperson.

Sarah is a Girl Scout, and she loves to sell Girl Scout Cookies… and she’s very good at it.

“I sold over 500 boxes last year,” she said. “And I won prizes. I won a trip to Ft. Rapids in Columbus and stuffed animals.”

All the members of her troop, number 1368, are good cookie-sellers. They sold enough cookies to pay for a trip to the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus.

“We had a lot of fun,” Sarah said.

She’s been in scouting since kindergarten. She has always enjoyed it and now enjoys earning badges.

“My vest is over half full in just three years,” she said.

Sarah, who will be in the sixth grade at Nelsonville-York Middle School, said her “favorite thing to do” is to play in the band.

“I play the clarinet. I just started last year. I did a duet in the spring concert,” she said.

Sarah’s family consists of her father, James Whitmore; mother, Julie Conrad; step-father, Jim Conrad; and step-brother, Jarod Conrad.

This summer she’s keeping busy with acting classes at Ohio Valley Summer Theater at ARTS/West.

“We’re learning how to do emotions, projects and stage combat,” she said with a big smile. “I can slap people now, and I can make the sound effects! It’s so cool. They teach us how to bow at the end of a performance and where to put your hands. I really like it. We’re going to do the showcase soon, and we’ll do skits. I have a skit where I’m planning a dance party, and I have to disco across the stage.”

Julie Conrad, on hearing this, said, “I can’t wait!”

Sarah’s looking forward to playing volleyball with her team again this year. “I’ve been playing volleyball with the same team since the third grade,” she said.

Sarah then talked about her career plans, and it’s obvious Sarah Whitmore will have a busy life once she is grown.

“I’m going to be a pediatric cancer scientist,” she said. “It hurts my feelings that infants and children die every day, and it’s not their fault. I want to do research to find a way to cure them.”

She then talked about her less serious career plans

“And I’m going to be a fashion designer,” she said. “It’s fun, and I’ve been doing that with my friends for a year. We have big notebooks full of designs. And I’m going to be a pre-school or kindergarten teacher because I like kids that age. Oh, and I may be a botanist and study plants.”

With all those choices, which one will she decide to pursue?

“Well, I’ll just see which one I’m best at,” she said.
