Women Raise the Roof A brief history Print E-mail

In 1999, two women from Athens developed a novel concept: to get women in Athens working together for a common cause. That was the birth of Athens Women Raise the Roof, a coalition of the Athens County Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

Since that time, the WRTR women have built four houses (located in Glouster and Nelsonville) and are working on the fifth (located in Albany). In addition to building, the women have the responsibility of raising funds for the costs of materials and supplies.

Why has this group been so successful? The build is about more than just hammering. It is being role models to the daughters (and sons, as well) of the partner families to let them know there are no limits to their future. These role models are working mothers, at-home mothers, grandmothers, even great-grandmothers; they are teachers, nurses, business owners, librarians and more. It is an opportunity to build relationships and friendships with women not necessarily in their immediate circle of friends.

It is also about learning skills and gaining confidence, not just for building but also for home projects; it is an empowering experience. It is reaching that level of self-actualization for selflessly helping others. It is developing bonds with fellow builders and the partner families that will last a lifetime.

This project has created an opportunity for everyone. In addition to the builders, there are women behind the scenes working on fundraising projects, others who coordinate communications and public relations, and still others who lick and stamp envelopes.
